Tips for Selling Online

Everyone loves extra cash in their pocket. One of the best ways to make money on the side is to sell merchandise online. Whether you’re looking to sell a few items, or if you’re interested in building a long-term brand, it’s important to know how to sell online.

1. What you are going to sell: You can sell anything online, so how do you choose what you want to sell? Ask yourself what you are passionate about, and start thinking of things that people will like or buy. For example, you love football and you know how to do graphic design. Then, you can create original prints of all of this year’s quarterbacks and sell them per copy.

If you sell physical items, consider the size and space that you have to store the merchandise. If you are in a tight space, it may not be a good idea to sell wood sculptures, unless you’re willing to pay for storage space.

2. Build a Strong Profile: Have a strong personal profile for your customers to view. People want to buy from someone that they like and trust. Have a profile with a clear image of who you are, and write out a detailed description of who you are. Include things about why you love what you do, as well as fun facts about yourself. Keep things light, clear, and concise. People want to get to know you, but they also don’t take the time to decipher difficult language.

Have a strong product profile for each item that you are selling. Give bullet point selling points to any and every question that customers may have. Answer things like ‘what size is it,’ ‘is it customizable,’ ‘what colors does it come in,’ ‘how many you have,’ etc. It doesn’t hurt to explain these things in simple terms to give people a clear picture of exactly what they are purchasing.

3. High Quality Photos: Along with the good description, you want to have several high quality photos of every item that you are selling. Give size references so people can visualize how small or large the item is. If you are selling earrings, then have a photo of the earrings next to a quarter for people to see the size comparison. Or, for larger items, put a ruler or tape measure next to it to give customers a real life example of the size of the item.

You want to have images that only have one or two things in it with a blank background. Too much going on in a photo can turn the viewer off.

Stick with photos that are around 500-200 pixels in size for selling online. Small pixels load better on web pages. The last thing you want is for someone to leave your site because they can’t see the images of your merchandise.

4. Mobile/Tablet friendly: Desktops are becoming less popular as mobile devices become the primary way people shop online. However you decide to sell your products, make sure that it is on a mobile-friendly platform. Selling on public marketplaces are one of the best ways to start. These websites are already mobile friendly and they have the traffic that you need to put your merchandise in front of buyers. List your products on sites like Etsy, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay to begin making money. Once you grow, you can even create your own website.

You can have a successful online business by sticking to these 4 things. Sell a product that you are passionate about, take great photos of it, and write up a detailed description of both you and the product. Put it in on websites that already have ready buyers, and you’ll be seeing money coming through the door!
